I was born in Ayrshire, Scotland and raised on a family tradition of folk tales and ghost stories from southern Scotland and Ireland. Tales of the merfolk and of fairies from my paternal grandfather’s Ayrshire. Irish and Galloway lore from my maternal grandmother. Ghost stories from my Uncle William McColm.

From these childhood tales and a love of folklore and mythology from around the world, Folklore of Scotland is the third book in a series. My first, a Folklore of the Lake District. Second, Boggarts, Brownies, Hobs and their Goblin Kin: an Encyclopedia of World Folklore. All three titles published through my own imprint, The FolkLore Press.

There are six illustrations in the book’s Rogues Gallery, but contained within this introduction are many more, some taken from my Boggarts, Brownies, Hobs and their Goblin Kin and from my recent project, a Mythical Menagerie.
